1. Getting Started in Tbilisi
I'm a little tired. And excited. A journey into the unknown. Maybe it's what I'm going to see, taste, and feel that excites me. Maybe it's just to satisfy my longing for the feeling of being on the road. Meeting my lover.

I'm so excited, you'd think I'm not a 26-year-old man, but a 15-year-old high school student. You'd think I was a young man going to meet his first love. So excited, so happy, so silly…

You would think that this is not the man who toured Japan-South Korea just 2 months ago. You are going to your 53rd country. What is this excitement! The answer is obvious actually.

It is not about going to countries. It is about being on the road. It is about that feeling that is engraved in your soul, body, mind, and heart while traveling. It is longed for, expected, yearned for…

The excitement of being alone again, listening to yourself, your heart, and soul, confronting yourself a little, and occasionally finding the opportunity to talk to yourself.

New people, new streets, new alphabets, new currencies, new foods, new colors… Those words are in my head again. That feeling is in my heart. The dream is mine. The longing for freedom that I need to pursue, discover, and live.

Even if it is for 2 days. Even if it is for 2 hours. Even if it is for 2 seconds. I have to go. I have to escape. I have to learn, I have to discover. I have to live. Above all else. I have to breathe. That's why I'm going. Even though it's close, it's a great place to escape to this time. My new stop is Tbilisi-Georgia...

The Waterfall Just Ahead of the Sulfur Baths

I don't actually have very high expectations for Georgia. Maybe that knowledge and experience has slowly made me selective. I don't know.

I don't expect a city or country that is so big. Those who go say it's a small but undiscovered place. 2-3 days is enough. They say 4 is too much. It's good for resting.

And besides, you can even enter with an ID, let alone a visa. On top of that, you can even find a round-trip plane ticket for 100-150 dollars. You figure out the rest!

However, this trip will be a little different. "Imagine it. Follow me!" I kept saying. I looked and saw people I didn't know on the plane. We followed you. What's the connection? I don't know. Didn't you say follow me?

Well, then, let's travel together. Let's dream together. Let's taste together. Let's get lost together. Wasn't life beautiful when shared? It really was. How beautiful it was!

I love you. I'm glad we met. I'm glad we traveled together, chatted together, taught me what I didn't know, told me what I knew. I hope to see you on new roads, lands, and realms. My 53rd country is Georgia-Tbilisi..

2. About Tbilisi-Georgia

What kind of a place is Tbilisi? Don't expect much. Let me tell you from the beginning. You can't see those famous squares of Europe or those nice streets in this city. There are some cities. Their streets are old. But they smell of history. They are clean. They are tidy. You can feel it. Like Rome, for example. You know. They are old but valuable.

But Tbilisi is not like that, my friend. It is really old and not very well preserved. Its value is not appreciated. It is waiting for a spark like a very famous artist waiting to be discovered.

It is time to talk about the culture of the country and the city a little. In order to be a Tbilisi Travel Guide, I would like to give some information about Tbilisi, transportation in Tbilisi, food and drink in Tbilisi, places to visit in Tbilisi, short information about Georgia and the similarities of Georgian culture with us in this article.

I even added the video I took from the Narikala Castle, one of the highest points of the city. So, you can learn a little bit about Tbilisi before you go. Let's start...

As you know, Georgia is one of our neighbors right next to our Black Sea region. It is located in the south of the Caucasus. Its capital is Tbilisi. Armenia and Azerbaijan are in the south of the country, and Russia is in the north.

Tbilisi (Tblisi in English) is a historical city founded in the 5th century. You understand this as soon as you go to the city. It is a city that is quite old and still preserves its historical texture with its streets, buildings, and churches. You realize this as soon as you go to the old city area.

Would You Like to Stay in Tbilisi for 10 Dollars Per Night? Check it out HERE.

Tbilisi has been particularly influenced by the Middle Ages and Soviet architecture. Eastern Orthodox Christian culture is especially dominant. In addition, the guys are very, very fond of religion. All the churches are always full to the brim.

Oh, and you see couples getting married all the time. There are so many weddings that 2-3 couples are getting married at the same time in each church. I even added the video I shot in the church below so you can see it. Another feature of the city is that it was destroyed and rebuilt 29 times.

You can clearly see this while walking around. Dude, is everything broken, dilapidated and ruined! You will see this on every street, especially in the Old Town.

3. Tbilisi-Georgia Travel Guide

I say let's quickly go over my useful Tbilisi-Georgia travel notes. Do you know what the best part of this country is?

We can enter with an ID, let alone a passport. It is also a very cheap country. The currencies are GEL and 1 dollar is equivalent to 2.4 GEL (also called Lari). A pack of cigarettes is around 3-4 GEL, a bottle of wine is around 10-15 GEL, meals are usually around 5-10 GEL, beer is around 2-3 GEL. I will list the prices one by one below.

Georgia became my 53rd country. I had made some plans before going and had a nice plan about the estimated places to visit and costs.

Without any mistake, my travel companions and I had a wonderful 3 days. We rested. We relaxed. We got lost in the streets. We had fun. We laughed. We found peace…

Metehki Church

It is a very cheap country in general. As I said, 30 dollars a day is a lot. Why?

Because the salaries of police or teachers in this country are around 300-400 dollars. Think about the rest! When you walk on the streets, you see begging children, aunts, uncles everywhere…

But look, they are everywhere. I think the last time I saw so many beggars was in India. As someone who returned from Japan just 2 months ago, can I tell you something?

After traveling and seeing, you understand better how important civilization, prosperity, and education are. The world is very unfair. There is nothing that is fair. As a brother who has traveled, seen, and experienced these differences, I can clearly say this.

After finishing these articles, if you have time, read my Japan articles. Then you will understand better what I mean and have a better chance of comparing…

Churches-Always Busy

There is free Wi-Fi everywhere in the city. The Wi-Fi named “Tbilisi Loves You” can be used at any hour. But you only have 30 minutes of it every hour.

Afterwards, it is automatically renewed. Everything is quite cheap in the city. But especially the Old Town area is expensive, as in every city.

The weather is always cold. The country’s climate is extremely cold in winter and extremely hot in summer. The people are cold. Also, people only kiss on one cheek when greeting each other. It might catch your attention.

Oh, by the way, Georgians are not a polite nation. They are quite rude. Especially in restaurants. My friend, you are going to eat a meal, wouldn’t one person smile? Let’s forget that, let’s say you ate together.

They don't divide it one by one. They say, "You add them all up. I can't deal with the bill one by one." Just think, they are so indifferent, they don't care. We couldn't pay one by one even at a restaurant. So if you're coming with a group, be aware of this.

4. Transportation in Tbilisi-Georgia

How to get to Tbilisi? How to get around Tbilisi? I said we flew for 100-150 dollars. And round trip. I wanted to say this first. Because the most questions come from here.

I thought I'd answer it right away before you ask. We didn't buy the ticket that early. If we had bought it early, it wouldn't have gone down even more.

Dogs in Mtatsiminda Park

I think we were lucky in this regard. Just think, even THY was around 140 dollars. So I'd say write this down somewhere. You know, you always ask where I can go cheaply in the area. Here, Tbilisi is one of the most affordable places for you. Also, the airport in this city is called Novo Alexeyevka.

Many companies fly here. You can check whichever is the most suitable from THY or Pegasus. I have already written a long article about buying tickets.

If you are wondering how to find cheap plane tickets to Tbilisi, check out my article on the best plane and train ticket sites.

After arriving at the airport, you can either take a bus, a taxi or shuttles to the city center.

Buses (bus number 37) are 0.5 GEL. The city center takes about 50 minutes. Taxi is 20-30 GEL. If you are coming as a group, a taxi is a good option, but if you are a small group, you can go by bus.

The bus drops you off in the city center. You can also use the metro from there. By the way, there is free wi-fi at the airport. You can also exchange money at the airport. The exchange rates were quite reasonable.

Sulfur Baths

If you are coming to the country by bus, you can also enter the country with the Metro Turizm company, but there is no need for it. Because the bus is around 50 dollars one way and it takes 25 hours from Istanbul.

If you want to come from Batumi, you can come by bus for around 20-30 dollars. It takes about 5 hours. You can read our detailed travel notes in our Batumi Travel Guide article.

If you are going to travel by train, trains are generally around 40 dollars. If you are coming from Armenia or Azerbaijan, train tickets are around 20-30 dollars.

5. Eating and Drinking in Tbilisi

Where to eat and drink in Tbilisi? What is Georgian food like? Should I cut it short or extend it? I don't know.

Because believe me, they don't have such a great food culture, my friend. There is nothing to say, "Look, definitely eat this. Don't come back without eating it!"

But just in case, I want to tell you about the food, the prices and 3-5 restaurants.

Hacupuri

Hacupuri: 6-8 GEL. Actually, it is a flatbread. But it cannot compete with ours, my friend. I don't know, I didn't see such a joke.

It is eaten when you are hungry, but you should taste it while you are here. There are different types, like egg, sausage, cheese, vegetable. One is more than enough for one person.

Chashushuli: Meat in a stew. It contains mushrooms, onion, garlic, coriander and black pepper. 10-15 GEL.

Khinkali: Georgian dumplings. We ate it at a very bad place the first day. I hated it. We ate it at a better place the next day and loved it. If you eat it at a nice place, you will like it. It is a bit watery. The big version of our dumplings. 4 for 5 GEL.

Khinkali

Phkali: It is consumed as a starter. It has eggplant, tomatoes, etc. Its photo is like this. It is usually 8-10 GEL.

Cheese and Wine: The pride of the country. They are very ambitious about wine (Tsinandali Wine was nice). You will see it while you are visiting the city.

There are wine houses everywhere. Definitely try it while you are here. Even if you don't try it, take a few bottles of Georgian wine with you. We loved it. A bottle of wine is usually 10-20 GEL. Of course, if you drink it at a restaurant, it is around 40 GEL.

Tabaka: The usual fried leg. It is quite delicious. Georgians also love chicken. It is usually 8-10 GEL.

Steaks: Around 20-27 GEL. Not bad. But it was not that good.

Churchkhela: The usual sugar sausage. You can see it everywhere. It is sold in abundance, especially in places similar to our herbalists.

Churchkhela

Wenddy’s or MC Donald’s: 10-13 GEL. We saw one MC Donald’s and Wenddy’s. It’s in Rose Revolution Square. While you’re here, eat Georgian food. Forget about MC Donald’s. But if you want to be sure, you know.

Street-style pastry-like dishes: For 1 GEL, you can eat one of the pastries below. You can also drink tea with it. That’s 1 GEL.

It makes a great pair for breakfast. There are especially good places on Kote Afkhazi Street, at the corner of Freedom Square.

Chacha: 3-5 GEL. A kind of Georgian vodka. It hits you hard. It’s essentially a byproduct of wine. It’s made from the pulp left over when wine is made. It’s drunk as shot.

It’s a very high-alcohol drink. There are different types: black mulberry, tangerine or fig. I recommend you not to drink too much.

Chacha: The killer version of vodka

Sparkling Water: 2-3 GEL. They have very nice sparkling waters. The ones with lemon are very nice. I recommend it.

Tequila: 8 GEL but in the restaurant. If you buy it outside, 3-4 GEL.

Beer: 3-6 GEL. Their most famous beers are Natakhtari, Herzog, Mtieli and Argo.

Cocktail: 15-22 GEL. Don't drink it. No need. Also, they usually make really bad ones.

Tbilisi Restaurant Recommendations: There is a place called Marco Polo. It is very nice to eat. Right across from the Radisson Blu Hotel. It is located at No: 44 on Rustavali Boulevard.

Their beers in particular should be tried. We didn't have time. We were full. But if you have the chance, write it down. Its design was very nice. We loved it.

Marco Polo Restaurant

There is also a restaurant called Shemokhede Genatsvale. It is across from the only MC Donald's in the city. The food here is good. It usually serves Georgian cuisine.

Both of these restaurants are located right where MC Donald's is. There is also a restaurant called Linville.

It is located on Kote Afkhazi Street, right on the corner of Freedom Square. This was also a nice restaurant. For breakfast, there is Tblisi Brunch restaurant right across from Linville. Stop by here in the mornings.

6. Accommodation in Tbilisi
Where to stay in Tbilisi? How much does accommodation cost? It is cheap. It really is.

We stayed at the hotel. As you know, we were a bit crowded. We paid around 15 dollars per person. Since it was 2 days, we decided not to stay in a hostel. Also, the location of the hotel was very nice. I definitely recommend it. If you want to see the hotel, you can click here.

Hostels were 5-6 dollars. As I said, this is a very cheap city. If you want to rent a house, you can rent a whole house for 20-30 dollars.

But above all, know this. The place you will stay should be close to the Old Town area. It is very convenient.

Would you like to stay in Tbilisi for 10 Dollars per night? Check HERE.

7. Entertainment-Shopping-Nightlife in Tbilisi
As for shopping in Tbilisi, global brands are the same everywhere. But there are small boutiques especially in the Old Town area. You can shop from these places.

But there is one place that I found very original. There is a place where antique dealers are located. Right next to the river. It is called Dry Bridge Market. Right next to 9 March Park. On the bridge.

Definitely visit here. Whether you are looking for antiques, paintings, strange, you won’t even understand what they are but interesting looking tools and equipment, souvenir puppets, knitting, ornaments, they are all here and very cheap. Definitely visit here. In fact, the video is below.

How is Tbilisi nightlife? Here we come to the most important part. In other words, Tbilisi nightlife travel notes. I, who loves having fun abroad, had a great time with my fellow travelers. We chatted. We got our fill. Let's summarize a little so that you can have some fun too. But let me state this in advance:

Never, ever, go to strip clubs. They'll rip you off. It's no different than Aksaray. A friend's advice from me to you. Don't ever, ever believe the taxi drivers who keep saying "Friend. Friend." or those who say "Brother, 100 Lari. Come on."

If you're going to have fun; there is a nightclub called Night Office. NEVER go to it. It's just a regular Keko place. My advice to you, my friend. But instead, definitely, definitely spend time in the Old Town area. Especially Jan Shardeni Street and Rkinis Rigi Street should be your go-to area.

There are dozens of bars and nightclubs here. Lounge Bar Studio 11 was my favorite place. Especially the music was great. There was also SAFE club. The design and music of this place were great.

Definitely stop by here. If you look at one and don't like it, you can go to the next place right next to it. There are many entertainment options in this area.

If you are looking for bar-style places, Dive Bar should be your choice. It is a place where mostly students hang out. There is also Primze Bar.

There is Canudos Ehnic Bar. This is also a backpacker place. All of these bars I mentioned are cheaper than the Old Town area and are generally student and backpacker places. So, it is cheaper.

There was also a place called Art Cafe. Young people were dancing to Latin music. It was a decent place. It was located on Kote Afkhazi Street. It is on the street right at the corner of Freedom Square. If you like Latin music and know how to dance, I would say go.

Casinos: How are the casinos in Tbilisi? Do you like gambling? I love playing Roulette. But that is also a maximum of 10 dollars. The aim is excitement. Anyway… There are many casinos. There is no entrance fee. These casinos are usually located in the best hotels of the city.

These are; Shangri-la, Radisson Blu, Casino Iveria, Holiday Inn are the best ones. Drinks are not free in casinos. They are usually around 4 GEL. They change dollars. Credit cards are also accepted. Just so you know. I have added the video I shot at Shangri-la below so you can see.

How many days can you stay in Tbilisi? 2 days is enough, 3 days is a waste. I'm telling you. If you see that you want to stay in Georgia longer, go to the surrounding mountains.

Dry Bridge Antique Market

But come in the summer or spring. Because it is the most beautiful period and I heard many compliments. So I would say do some research and if you are going to stay longer, visit other cities and villages in addition to Tbilisi.

10. What are the things you should not do in Tbilisi?

Without having fun in Mtatsiminda Park

Without experiencing the nightlife in the Old Town or the bars I mentioned above

Without getting lost in the streets without planning

Without witnessing the wedding moment from beginning to end in the churches

If you like alcohol, without tasting the delicious wines
Especially to see the night illumination, without photographing the city from the Metehki Bridge

If you are fond of gambling, but know your limits, play a few games

Without tasting the cheap Georgian food on the streets

Don't leave my friend.

11. So what kind of route should you follow in Georgia?

I only went to Tbilisi. But let me give you a little tip. Maybe you want to stay longer. Georgia can be visited from beginning to end in 1 week or 10 days.

After Tbilisi, you can go to Telavi in the east and visit the wineries or go to Mtskheta in the north of Tbilisi and visit the old capital, Gudauri can be your next stop for ski enthusiasts.

Dry Bridge Eskiciler

Afterwards, you can go north and visit the cities of Gori and Kutaisi. Finally, you can turn to the far west, namely Batumi, and from there you can enter Turkey.

If I were to go, I would do this as the most beautiful Georgian route I would follow in Georgia.

Georgia is a country that stands out especially with its natural beauties. So, as you can see, there are many places to visit in Georgia.

I think if you were to ask, “The Sea. Where should I go in Georgia? What kind of route should I follow?”, I would suggest you this route. You can do this in reverse as well. Also, you can travel the country either by train, by car or by bus. All are available.

12. Why go to Georgia-Tbilisi?

Tell me a place nearby. It is cheap and visa-free.
Let's get away for the weekend. Let's relax.
Let's get lost in the streets for a bit. We like taking photos.
I haven't been abroad yet. Where should I start?
I am after going to one of the easiest countries to find cheap plane tickets.
I am a bit fond of nightlife. Let's get away. I will hang out at the casino while I am here.
I drink alcohol and smoke and when I return, let's come back with my hands full.

If you are saying, Tbilisi may be a good route for you. Even 2 days was enough and both me and my travel companions had a lot of fun.

But don't expect too much. Don't expect amazing beauties or a place that will take your breath away. If you are saying, "Let me take your breath away!"; go to India, Japan, Indonesia.

13. So how much does this Georgia-Tbilisi trip cost?

How expensive is Tbilisi Georgia? I roughly calculated the average costs. Except for the plane ticket, the expenses you will make are up to you. The amounts I have stated may deviate by 3 or 5.

Transportation – We flew for 100-140 dollars. But it is usually around 150-200 dollars. Even if you come by bus or train, it will not be cheaper than this.
Food – Especially the Old Town area is quite expensive. Don’t mess with it. If you do, food and drinks are usually around 20 GEL. But this depends entirely on what you eat. However, if you eat somewhere outside of the Old Town, you can be full for 10-15 GEL.
Accommodation – We stayed at a hotel. We paid 15 dollars per person. It is a lot of money in Tbilisi conditions. We didn’t care since we were going to stay for 2 days. But if we were traveling with a backpacking mentality and staying in a hostel, we could have found a place for 5 dollars.
Entertainment – Definitely go to the amusement park in Mtatsiminda Park. The roller coaster was 5 GEL, the big Ferris wheel was 3.5 GEL. The entrance fee to nightclubs is usually 10 GEL.

1 drink is free with it. They don’t charge girls. As for drinks, beer is 6-8 GEL, cocktails are 22 GEL, sprat is 6 GEL, tequila is 8 GEL. So, alcohol in the venues is not cheap at all.

If you go to the casino, they don’t charge an entrance fee. But if you want something to drink while playing, you can’t get alcohol for free like in many countries. It’s usually 4 GEL.

Shopping – I can’t really say anything about shopping. If it were me, I would go to the Dry Bridge Antique Market, and I did, and I would buy some interesting souvenirs. As a store, it wasn’t a place that really caught our attention. We didn’t really need it.

Georgian Churches

In general, I think 30-40 dollars a day would be enough. Of course, this may seem like a lot. Because this country is quite poor.

After all, it is not a European country. After buying your plane ticket, do you stay for free, eat on the street, drink at home and go have fun… It is completely up to you.

14. When to Go to Tbilisi?

When is the best season to go to Tbilisi? You can go any time except winter. But I would not recommend going to Tbilisi in the summer. Because winters are very cold and summers are extremely hot.

I think the best times would be both autumn and spring. Personally, we went around November 20th and the weather was a little colder than Istanbul. We were lucky…

15. What are the things I haven’t done in Tbilisi that I can recommend to you?

I haven’t been to other cities in the vicinity. If you want to go, I already explained above in the section on how to follow a route in Georgia.

I didn’t go to Sameba Cathedral, which is located on the opposite side of the river.

Churches in Tbilisi

I didn’t see Avlabari Street and its surroundings, which are right next to Sameba Cathedral and where you can observe the people.

There is a famous place called Vake district. It is considered a rich neighborhood. There are luxury shops, restaurants and bars. I didn’t go.

There is a lake called Kus Tba (Turtle Lake). Tbilisi people come to this lake to relax. If you have time, I recommend you visit.

16. My warnings about Tbilisi

A sullen society. Don’t expect politeness. They will look at your face for 2 hours in a restaurant without smiling. You won’t even understand if you are a customer or an employee. So don’t be surprised.

Don’t trust taxi drivers. They will immediately start a conversation by saying “Brother, there are girls. 100 COME.” Don’t believe them.
Don’t go to strip clubs. They will drive the man away. I warn you. If you are really curious, go to Ukraine. Georgia is not the right place.

Don't expect too much from their food. So make sure you are full.

Don't drink too much sprat. It hits the man hard. I warn you.
Don't go to very safe places in the evenings. The streets are very deserted. Just in case!

You can take TL with you. They exchange it. But they love dollars.

Hoping to Meet You on New Roads…

Dress warmly in the evenings. It gets really cold. Whatever the day, it gets worse in the evenings.
There is no such thing as a traffic light in the country. Be very careful when crossing the street. It makes you miss Turkey in this regard.
Cigarettes and alcohol are very cheap. Don’t exaggerate and buy them.
Don’t trust your girls. They know why many Turkish men come. They feed you, make you drink, then take you in their taxi, and pay for it, leaving you staring in amazement.
Don’t be angry with me for what I said. Even if I am wrong, I thought I would give you some information based on what I have seen and experienced. You should know. Be prepared so that your work doesn’t get left to chance and your vacation is wasted.
Don’t expect much. It’s not a city, by any means. It’s not even one of the top 1,000 cities to see before you die. But it is cheap. You keep asking. I am telling you this to set an example and make it an ideal place to start.
